daffodils: update

Today I talked with Dad for 3 hours and 28 minutes. I didn’t keep track of time. My cell phone did. Dad told me that the daffodils are up, about four inches. When they are in bloom, Dad likes to cut some each Wednesday morning, his shopping day. Before shopping, Dad stops by and places daffodils on Mom’s grave. After shopping, Dad goes to MacDonald’s for his weekly filet of fish sandwich. A few years ago, the priest who lives across the street asked Dad if he could have some of the daffodils for his front room. Dad cut some for him. The next day the priest, who noticed that Dad’s footstool in the living room was tattered and frayed, brought Dad a nice green leather covered footstool (Dad calls it a hassock) as a thank you.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. St. David, the patron saint of Wales, has a day as well: March 1. On that day it’s traditional to wear a daffodil or a leek.

  1. Having a nice long, simple conversation with an aging parent is a joy not to be taken for granted.
    I'm envious.
