How the Mighty Fall

Reading, Jim Collins’ new book, I kept thinking about the Obama administration.

It appears to me that his strategy, actually Rahm Emanuel’s strategy, of putting into motion a great deal of programs and initiatives has contributed to what could be a formula for failure faster than even his critics could predict.

But it’s not too late to turn things around, to recognize some basic themes, to moderate the discussions, and establish some political calm by doing fewer things and doing them well.

Maybe Barack and Michelle will discuss this subject over dinner, in Martha’s Vineyard this week, while Rahm holds down the fort. Maybe they have this book on their nightstand.

What we should recognize, as well, is that Obama has not had a crisis yet. He’s been dancing to his own playlist of familiar tunes. Too many tunes. But every President has an unforeseen event that tests their mettle, exercises their resolve, and generates unintended consequences based upon decision-making.

Jim Collins presents his perceived phases of a fall:
- hubris born of success
- undisciplined pursuit of more
- denial of risk and peril
- grasping for salvation
- capitulation

One thing Jim does not present are processes of decision-making…that seems to be the hard part after one realizes the track needs switching…
