It’s not a demographic group counted on the national census. Job applications do not have a box for them to check. But they exist as a group throughout America. They attend live broadcasts of Prairie Home Companion and laugh at cheese jokes. They read books and newspapers. Their clothing is unassuming and earth-toned but sometimes they’ll wear the t-shirt of an obscure blues musician you’ve never heard of. But trying to describe them is very hard, really. They’re that quiet minority, quietly reading, sitting in their parked car in the driveway with the engine off and the radio on.
An example of an “npr-people” is Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald. Before becoming a large animal Vet, he was a bouncer for the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards encouraged Kevin to “get a grip on his life” and become something. Here is a lecture from Kevin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=004eWyAtbY4
