prawns

Yesterday, my friend Marc and I went to see District 9. Compelling and unlike any movie I’ve seen before. The director combines various styles of cinematography…hand held, rough video, crisply filmed close-ups, surveillance camera footage, and CGI magic. I think what makes this different for me is the combination of techniques. There are ample reviews of the film out there to read, and people have created a buzz discussing the allegory elements to the story…aliens (called prawns) sequestered in a Soweto-style ghetto in Johannesburg, SA. I recognized none of the actors.

Much like with “Slumdog Millionaire”, I was gripped by the look and feel of this film. I walked out of Slumdog with Emily and remarked that we’d seen the best picture. Yesterday, I said the same thing to Marc.

There will be more districts, I believe.
