rusty cage

Inside a juvenile detention school classroom, while each period was 50 minutes long, given the usual distractions, you could count on about 20 minutes of attention, concentration, just a little nugget each day, and some days there wasn’t class due to after hours antics and the resulting “snow day” as we used to call it, gave us extra prep time.

As an experiment, a portion of a song, actually just the lyrics to a Soundgarden song called “Rusty Cage”. The assignment, pair up with your tablemate and develop a rap using these lyrics…five minutes…raise your hand when you’re done…we’ll record your efforts which you can refine over lunch period along as the guards don’t get annoyed, OK?

Question: “This looks like a poem about breakin’ out of a place like this…is that it?”

When the forest burns
Along the road
Like gods eyes
In my headlights
When the dogs are looking
For their bones
And its raining icepicks
On your steel shore
Im gonna break
Im gonna break my
Im gonna break my rusty cage and run

Pretty fun assignment…then we played Johnny Cash’s version…yo man, you tricked us, this is country! Aw man, that was cold…
