alternate presidential assignments

There will be a short essay question for those choosing to listen. Class? Please listen. Thank you. There will be a short writing assignment for those of you allowed to attend the President’s address. For those of you not attending, please read Chapters 1-4 of the “Audacity of Hope.”

The class looked at each other while the teacher wrote the assignments in blue and red letters on the whiteboard. Derek, raised his hand.

That’s one hundred and thirty six pages! I may as well just read the next chapter entitled “Opportunity”! I’m telling my parents about this injustice.

Melanie, whose father encouraged her to just tough it out and listen to the speech, worried about the essay question and the length of the required paper. She slipped her iPhone out of her dayrunner and checked to see if she had an app for this.

Could you give us the essay question now? That way, we can frame our listening to the intended discussion topic and take notes accordingly.

In blue letters, the teacher wrote the following question:
"Did the speech warrant the dedicated time, public relations effort, your time, my time, and the President’s time? Please calculate the man-hours to the best of your ability and quantify the cost in terms of the number of minimum wage workers we could have hired for a six month contract. Weigh this cost factor against any three benefits you may receive from this speech. Use specific examples. Submit your essay in MLA format, seven pages, by Friday morning."

Now…who’d like a copy of the book?
