Dressed at First Friday

A First Friday highlight, last night, for me was Betsy Timmer’s installation, entitled “Dressed” at the Cocoon Gallery at the Arts Incubator on 18th Street. After smiling and absorbing the images and suggestions of the textile forms, the grand elegant gown, the towering “Everyday Dress” with more pockets than a girl could ever need except if she used them to carry her diamonds, and the simple pair of soft sagging cushy fuzzy breasts called “Mom”, I sensed these pieces coming alive.

When you visit, standing by "Everyday Dress", be careful not to bump into the walking short table, or step upon the “Kneeling sweeper”, or the dancing “Duster”. Better still, the small pieces, dancing beneath Everyday Dress, may beckon you to dance around, too.

This installation is a buffet for the eyes, tempts you to touch, and changes as you walk through and around it. It reminded me of a bridal shop with an incredible sense of humor and a clientele of giants from another place very far away, but yet very familiar.

Timmer’s installation runs until Sept. 26, 2009. Visit her website
…amazing.
