jackhammer by the numbers

When we saw the intersection of 17th and Main we both exclaimed together versions of “Uh Oh”, and “you gotta be kiddin’ me.” They weren’t kidding at all apparently. The street was decorated with fluorescent blues, oranges, reds, and a bright green. The lines looked very precise and, after staring at it a while, I wondered what subterranean wonders lurked beneath the asphalt. This looked like the most intricate set of street surgery instructions I’d ever seen.

I’m an engineer, or at least went to school for it and remember enough mechanical drawing and stress studies to make the street diagram come alive. I hoped that a local gang would have come by to “Tag” over this work very soon to postpone the pain. I even thought about buying spray paint and doing it myself.

The jackhammers started at 10pm last night. The acoustics were awesome. That intersection has to be where we set up the stage for Springsteen when he comes to town. Clarence’s sax will ring out all over town for sure without much amplification.

The jackhammer party ended at 4am this morning. I need coffee.

  1. I can sympathize, living a short block from the PATCO line, which is in the second year of a three-year track overhaul project. If the jackhammers, compressors and water pumps echoing off the rowhomes don't keep you awake, wait till they aim those huge lights down your street. Forget about sleep, just have a block party.
