Today, I listened to Don Henley’s “New York Minute” a few times and the words somehow contrasted with the life here in downtown Kansas City. This song will get serious airplay and reference today…Google or Bing it.
Unlike in NYC, everything cannot change here in a minute. I suppose that hip idea of fate and speedy lifestyle makes for a great song by a guy who lives in a beach house at Malibu. It’s a good example of virtual reality that makes for a great soundtrack and now a phrase that we hear often. I‘ve heard people recently break into song saying it and I‘m guilty as charged.
The song does have some ironic application today, especially today, more so than when Henley released it in 1989…yes 89…the song is 20 years old. The opening stanza about the Wall Street guy who decides to check out on the subway tracks due to some financial mischief is chilling, and it goes from there to a personal plea from this dude for redemption with his girl. But with the Wall street guy and the guy seeking a second go at it, I doubt their situations developed in a “New York minute.” It’s as if we want to change in a minute…but we all know it takes time for that. But it’s still a cool song with atmosphere.
