april

The month of April contains a few calendar days that evoke memory and celebration for me. My daughter’s birthday, a grand daughter’s birthday, my son’s birthday, and the day my son departed this world. I just wrote something to a friend about the nature of spirit. We’re both not sure how it all works. My humble theory contends that spirit consists of the collective memories of people recalling a person. Maybe we can extend that memory to writing, art, even the internet. I always think that a person’s artistic creation, or even having built something, made some kind of mark here, contains a bit of essence…some spirit. For example, I wear Sean’s fluffy black sweater and that must have some of his DNA swirling around the fibers somewhere. I have screenshots of his MySpace page. So, it’s not just memory but also perhaps physical reminders, places they’ve been, chairs they’ve sat upon. It’s something to ponder for sure. Sean died on this day, April 8, 2006. His birthday is April 18. His sister, Jens, was born on April 26, 1980. Lila Grace was born on April 14, 2008. Sean “touched” Lila's older sister, Ryan when she was in Jens’ belly and Sean would often lend Ryan the earphones to his iPod to listen to some of his music. Jens has Sean’s iPod and listens to it daily. I gave Sean the iPod for Christmas in 2002. He was an early iPod user and that 60 gig iPod is very near full of his musical treats. Sean would have been 24 this month. Jens thinks it’s very cool to be remembered young like Sean. This posting is not meant to be melancholy or maudlin in any way. It’s a chance to post another bit of Seany, and create another memory of him to perpetuate my theory. Sean sits with Casper here.
