Hunter S. Thompson's red IBM SelectricTobias Wolff’s novel, “Old School”, disappointed me given its rather interesting premise. The story lacked atmosphere and edge. No characters seemed developed enough to know much less like or not. The main character, like Hunter S. Thompson:
- enjoyed re-typing novels by Hemingway (Hunter enjoyed re-typing Fitzgerald and Faulkner as well as Ernest)
- thought of Hemingway as their favourite writer
- went to Columbia University
- spent a bit of time in the military, Hunter in the Air Force
Thankfully, these “hints of Hunter”, created a character for me to imagine. Otherwise, this dull novel seemed to be written like an afterthought.
