My friend George and I had lunch together today at the Red Snapper on 85th and Ward Parkway. We intended to talk about the Kansas City Star newspaper. George is a member of the Reader Advisory Panel. The newspaper, like many, faces challenges…decreasing revenue from advertisements, layoffs, and awkward entry into the online linked-economy. We talked about piano music and musicians. George plays ragtime. George loves jazz, too. My friend Emily and I listened to a CD of Ahmad Jamal’s music at least three times this weekend. His playing has “space”, breathing room for the other musicians. Miles Davis loved Jamal’s playing…called him the best he ever heard.
