UCLA…not that one

Recently I reconnected with a fellow teacher I knew at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention School, ’95 – ’97. Joyce McGautha is the Director (principal) of the Urban Community Leadership Academy (UCLA) charter school at 15th and the Paseo, Kansas City, MO. She asked me to be a member of her board and tonight was the first meeting. When I first met Joyce, she was a “retired” teacher coming back to teach at the juvee in ’95. She’s been steering this charter school since she started it in 2002, her second post-retirement project. Don’t know where she gets the energy, but she’s as energetic as ever and really committed to her students. School starts next Wednesday. I’m stoked.
