I think Hunter S. Thompson would enjoy the current times of financial and economic stories dominating the media; fallen Wall Street investors, jilted ripped-off investors, CEO’s fired by their boss – the government, all this rumbling background talk about the rise of socialism. Somehow, we haven’t really seen a “school of journalism” built around the Thompson model. OK, maybe the Daily Show. But Jon Stewart must stay sober on the air due to insurance costs and certainly cannot chain-smoke. Bill Maher comes close with his insights, but he’s too sober. Times seem sober. Can you imagine teaching Hunter’s work in a high school literature class? In high school, I gravitated to reading William F. Buckley, Jr. Buckley smoked cigars and drank some. He seemed sober every week on his show “Firing Line”. Buckley’s thoughts after Hunter’s departure: http://www.nationalreview.com/buckley/wfb200503011513.aspReading Hunter S. Thompson makes me feel his emotions, hear his words. When I read William F. Buckley Jr., I need to have my dictionary handy.
Great. My thoughts exactly.
