volleyball food

Today, "thousands" (seemed so) of college volleyball players shopped in the market. There’s a national tournament here for men and women this week and weekend. These athletes purchased vast quantities of healthy foods: fruit, salads, juices, humus, flatbread…they poured over the salad bar like hungry cattle at a feed trough laughing and having a great time. The seating areas downstairs as well as upstairs were overflowing. And this was at 2pm, after the downtown office throng lunch rush. I felt very short today standing next to some of the players in the check out line and a bit out of place when I pulled out of my basket a pint of Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream, Beaujolais, and sharp cheddar. But I also purchased asparagus, humus, chiabata bread, and fruit. Spring feels like it’s decided to stay today.
